So… Someone Gave Me An Instant Pot

This past Christmas my mother in law gave me one of the best gifts I’ve ever been given – an Instant Pot! Now, normally I don’t get very excited about things like kitchen appliances, and I have to admit that as I unwrapped it, I was thinking, oh great… another kitchen appliance to clutter up my already overstuffed cupboards. Until that moment I had never heard of the glory of the Instant Pot (cue heavenly music).

As my mother in law began to talk about what they were I started to get excited. And all this praise came from a woman who does not enjoy the trouble of cooking all that much. She explained how it was a bunch of appliances all wrapped up in one neat electric pot. By the time she was finished I couldn’t wait to get it home and test it out.

The Instant Pot is a pressure cooker that doubles as a slow cooker or crockpot, rice cooker, grain cooker, frying pan, warmer, steamer, yogourt maker and sterilizer. It can sear and brown meat, make cakes, cook eggs and so much more!

What is an Instant Pot anyway?

Though it doesn’t completely live up to it’s name, the Instant Pot will definitely cut down on your cooking time, especially when cooking larger items like big cuts of meat. It can reduce your cooking time by up to 70% The Instant Pot is, essentially a pressure cooker that can do many other things by combining multiple cooking appliances into one. The Instant Pot is a:

  • pressure cooker
  • slow cooker or crockpot
  • rice cooker & grain and porridge cooker
  • egg cooker
  • frying pan (saute or sear meat)
  • steamer
  • warmer
  • sterilizer
  • yogourt maker
  • cake maker
  • soup pot

It comes in three sizes – 3 quart, 6 quart and 8 quart.

But which Instant Pot do I need?

I have a family of five and have a 6 quart Instant Pot, which is just the right size for us. The inner, stainless steel cooking container is about the same size as a large soup pot. With this size I can cook a whole chicken, a big pot of soup, or a medium size roast with potatoes and carrots. I feel that the 3 quart size would be perfect for a single person or couple, and that the 8 quart size would be good for a large family or someone doing batch cooking.

The Instant Pot also comes with 6-10 functions so you can choose the pot based on the kinds of recipes you will be cooking in it. Some models have bluetooth.

The final verdict:

I believe the Instant Pot is a great, affordable buy for the wide variety of meals you can prepare with it. It is easy to clean, uses less electricity than an oven, is portable – fits on the countertop comfortably, and is easy to use once you get a feel for it. I like it so much I bought one for my 78 year old father who has been very reluctant to use the oven since my mother passed away. He likes to put a piece of meat and potato or two with a bit of broth & spices and have a hearty and wholesome meal in just a few minutes.

I use my own Instant Pot once or twice a week. My favourite things to make in it so far have been roast beef, stews, chilis, and whole frozen chickens in under an hour (recipe coming soon!). The flavour is exceptional, given most of it is sealed inside during the cooking process. And it yields very moist and fork tender meats.

Meals In Minutes!

For anyone coming home from work after a long day, and wanting a home cooked meal without a fuss, the Instant Pot is right for you. Every kitchen needs one of these!

  • ultra-quick cooking speeds
  • cook from frozen
  • nutritious – seals in nutrients
  • super easy to clean
